Second Language Acquisition and Pedagogy

The following MCLLC faculty have published extensively in the research areas of second language acquisition and pedagogy. Second Language Acquisition is dedicated to an understanding and study of how adults acquire non-native languages. MCLLC is dedicated to advancing knowledge in this area and in the best in language learning techniques in our classes. The following faculty have published in this area:

Francis Bailey: Dr. Bailey’s research has focused on understanding English language development in classroom settings, with particular interest in barriers English Language Learners face in US educational institutions.  He draws upon both sociocultural and cognitive perspectives in order to gain insights into learners and learning processes.  His most recent publication is a book entitled, Memory at Work in the Classroom:  Strategies to Help Underachieving Students.  Professional Affiliations: TESOL and AAAL.

Brenna Byrd: Dr. Byrd's primary interests include intercultural competence and the performance of identity in Second Language classrooms, Second Language teaching methodology, and the acquisition of phonological systems.

Stayc DuBravac: Dr. DuBravac's primary interest include second language acquisition, computer-assisted language learning, applied linguistics, electronic media and chaos and complexity theory. His most recent publication is a book entitled Technology in the L2 Curriculum

Wei Jiang: Ms. Jiang’s interests include teaching Chinese as a second language , Chinese language and culture, instructional strategies and best practices, students’ motivation factors and course climate and second language curriculum and online curriculum development. 

Milena Minkova: Milena Minkova's research interests include:  Latin tradition in its continuity and globality; Medieval Latin and Neo-Latin; Latin Composition; Latin Pedagogy and Active Latin. She is the author of several Latin textbooks. Professional affiliations: Academia Latinitati fovendae (elected fellow), American Philological Association, American Association of Neo-Latin Studies, Medieval Latin Studies Group (member of the Steering Committee), Mommsen-Gesellschaft Society of German scholars of Greek and Roman Studies, American Classical League, Classical Association of Middle West and South. 

Jeff Rogers: Dr. Rogers' research interests include second language acquisition, curriculum development, artuculation.

Terence Tunberg: Dr. Tunberg’s research interests include Latin Literature, Renaissance Studies, Latin Pedagogy and Active Latin. He was the founder of Conventiculum Latin or immersion seminar for Latin students and teachers, which has become a major event in world wide Latin circles. Together with Milena Minkova, he has written three books pertaining to the field of Latin pedagogy. He and Professor Minkova are the directors of Institute for Latin Studies, a graduate certificate course sequence at UK, which is a unique post-graduate curriculum in Latin in North America, and is ideally situated to train new Latin teachers who want to approach Latin actively.
