FLIE/French Internship and Study Abroad Opportunities
 
Calvados
The Calvados internship program offers students the opportunity to intern in Calvados during the summer in a variety of professional settings.  
 
One student per semester is selected to receive a scholarship covering tuition, housing, and fees for study at the Université de Caen in Normandy, France.  Qualified students will have at least 6 semesters of French by the start of the program.  The application for this scholarship is competitive and includes an interview in French with the Sister Cities Committee.  An early deadline applies (January 15 for Fall and Spring semesters).
 
The Deauville Teaching Assistantship provides students who are highly competent in French with the opportunity to live in Deauville and teach English as a second language to elementary school students.  This program is also open to students who have recently graduated.  Qualified students will be strong in French (5-6 semesters preferred) and must commit to a full year in Deauville.  An early deadline applies (December 15). 
 
The KIIS Paris summer program is an academic program designed to take full advantage of the city’s abundant cultural resources. Students wishing to participate in the Paris program must have at least 12 hours of college-level French or the equivalent at time of departure. 
Program dates 2012: June 30-August 3 -- Application deadline: February 15, 2012
 
 
FLIE/German Study Abroad and Scholarship Opportunities
  • Heidelberg Scholarship
  • Students of German can study in Heidelberg, Bielefeld or Ludwigsburg, Germany and Graz or Salzburg, Austria.
 
FLIE/Japanese Study Abroad Opportunities, Internships, and Scholarships
 
The FLIE-Japanese program facilitates students’ learning by providing study abroad opportunities, internship sites, and scholarships.  
  • The Japan studies program has established an exchange agreement with a number of universities in Japan including but not limited to Akita International University, Kansai Gaidai University, and Nagoya University.  Students can also join the Department of Geography’s 6 week Summer Program in Japan, which is designed for a small group of students to travel throughout Japan and gain valuable insights into its environment, culture and landscapes.   For further information about study abroad, please visit Education Abroad Office.  http://www.uky.edu/educationabroad/
  • The current internship sites include: Lafayette High School, Japanese Saturday School (to be confirmed), and KI (USA) Corporation.  Interns are chosen on the merit basis.  Application information will be delivered to all FLIE-Japanese majors via email when the application deadline approaches.  
  • FLIE-Japanese program is currently constructing a Study Travel Abroad Scholarship Fund.  Departmental scholarships may become available.  Application information will be delivered to all FLIE-Japanese majors via email when the application deadline approaches. 
 
 
FLIE/Russian Study Abroad Opportunities, Internships, and Scholarships
 
Russian Department Education Abroad Scholarship: The Russian Studies Education Abroad scholarship is open to any UK student who plans to study Russian on an officially UK-sanctioned program in Russia or a Russian-speaking country for a summer, semester, or academic year.  The scholarship, established by Professor (emeritus) Jerry Janecek, enables students to receive a modest stipend to help defray program costs or support an airline ticket.  Students on any level are welcome to apply.  A minimum of $500 is awarded to a student who receives the scholarship.  For application information, please contact Professor Cynthia Ruder at cynthia.ruder@uky.edu.
 
Business Russian Language and Internship Program—Moscow, Russia (American Councils)

Minimum GPA: 2.0

For those with intermediate to native level Russian language skills. Students will engage in coursework and an internship based on their language level and interests. 
 
Contemporary Russia—Moscow, Russia 
(American Councils) 
Language Req: English/Russian 
Class Standing: Any 
Minimum GPA: 2.0 
Term Offered: Summer 
Designed for students at all levels of Russian language proficiency, this program provides coursework like Russian politics, culture and 
economics in English, and Russian language at their appropriate level (i.e. beginning to advanced).
 
Russian Language and Area Studies Program- Moscow, Russia 
(American Councils) 
Language Req: Russian 
Class Standing: 4 semesters of Russian 
Minimum GPA: 2.0 
Term Offered: Year, Fall, Spring, Summer 
This program provides coursework that focuses both on improving students’ Russian language skills and better acquainting them with Russian history, 
politics, culture, etc. 
 
Business Russian Language and Internship Program– St. Petersburg, Russia (American Councils) 
Language Req: Russian 
Class Standing: 4 semesters of Russian 
Minimum GPA: 2.0 
Term Offered: Year, Fall, Spring, Summer

Moscow State University (KEI) - Russian Federation 
Language Req: None 
Class Standing: Undergraduates only 
Minimum GPA: 2.5 
Term Offered: Year, Semester, Summer 2 
Courses are taught in English. Concentrations include Russian language, Business, Law & Diplomacy, Culture & Humanities, and Computer Science.
 
Irkutsk State Linguistic University, 
Siberian Studies-Irkutsk, Russia (SRAS) 
Language Req: Russian/English 
Class Standing: Must have at least 30 hours 
Minimum GPA: 2.5 overall; 3.0 in major 
Term Offered: Year, Fall, Spring, Summer 
Because this program focuses on Siberia, it allows students to study how Siberian history and development influence its current 
economic, environmental, and social challenges.
 
Russian Language and Area Studies-Vladimir, Russia (American Councils) 
Language Req: Russian 
Class Standing: 2 yrs. of Russian courses 
Minimum GPA: 2.0 
Term Offered: Year, Fall, Spring, Summer 
Similar to the one operated in Moscow and St. Petersburg, this program is situated in Vladimir, a city that still retains a “small-town charm” and 
is one of the oldest cities in Russia.
 
Vladivostok State University of Economics and Service– Vladivostok, Russia (SRAS) 
Language Req: Russian/English 
Class Standing: Must have at least 30 hours 
Minimum GPA: 2.5 overall; 3.0 in major 
Term Offered: Year, Fall, Spring, Summer 
Focusing on the area of Russia that encounters influence from China, Japan, and South and North Korea, this program 
provides insight into a vital part of Russia that few understand.
