Student Scholarships, Fellowships and Awards


Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures Study and Research Abroad Scholarship

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must:

  • Be a major or minor in MCL or FLIE in one of the following tracks: Arabic and Islamic Studies, Chinese Studies, Classics, French and Francophone Studies, German Studies, Italian Studies, Japan Studies, or Russian Studies; or a minor in Jewish Studies studying Hebrew; or a graduate student in MCLLC
  • Complete the scholarship application by the deadline
  • Be a full-time, undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Kentucky
  • Apply for, or plan to apply for, an approved education abroad program in summer, fall, or spring terms
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0) at the time of the scholarship application
  • Be in good academic and judicial standing at the time of the award and the semester prior to the intended term abroad
  • A demonstrated financial need on the basis of the financial aid forms on file at the University of Kentucky Office of Financial Aid

Students are ineligible for this scholarship if they:

  • Are freshmen, transfer, or graduate students in their first semester at UK (result of GPA requirement)
  • Plan to use this scholarship in their final semester at UK

To apply, students must complete the following by the scholarship deadline:

Submit an online application which includes:

  1. Letter of recommendation from a UK professor or staff member
  2. Well-crafted, double-spaced essay (maximum 1000 words) answering the following question: How will this scholarship be particularly beneficial, meaningful, or helpful to you in the pursuit of your long-term educational and/or career goals?
  3. Copies of financial aid forms on file in the UK Financial Aid Office
  4. Application cover sheet (see below)

Scholarship Support

  1. Scholarship applications are accepted until January 30 each year. Submit all materials electronically to Taylor Kincaid at taylor.kincaid@uky.edu.
  2. The Scholarship Committee awards at least two scholarships per year with a minimum amount of $1,000.
  3. If funds are to be applied for travel, receipts must be supplied to the department for reimbursement. CLASSICS

Swift/Longacre/Scaife Fellowship, named after long-serving UK Classics Professor Louis Swift; long-serving Georgetown College Professor Ruth Longacre, responsible for sending many Latin teachers to Kentucky schools; and Digital Classics pioneer Ross Scaife from the UK Classics faculty, whose brilliant career was tragically cut short. This fellowship - amounting to several thousand dollars - is awarded to a graduate student in Classics for a year of study. The awardee alternates each year between a student planning to go on to doctorial studies in Classics after his or her time at UK, and a student planning to teach Latin in schools.

Nancy McClellan Fund for the Advancement of Classical Studies. Uses may include, but are not limited to: (a) one or more annual scholarship(s) and/or student award(s) studying Classics, to students who have completed their first academic semester; (b) program development support for the department with an emphasis on, but not limited to, technology and online learning; or (c) stipend(s) for graduate student(s) in the department.

William Exmew Active Latin Fund. Uses may include, but are not limited to (a) annual student award(s) for a graduate student(s) studying Active Latin; (b) research; (c) teaching and administrative support and/or other initiatives to support the needs of the Active Latin Program.



RUSSIAN

Russian Studies Education Abroad Scholarship is open to any UK student who plans to study Russian on an officially UK-sanctioned program in Russia or a Russian-speaking country for a summer, semester, or academic year. The scholarship, established by Professor Emeritus Jerry Janecek, enables students to receive a modest stipend to help defray program costs or support an airline ticket. Students at any level are welcome to apply. A minimum of $500 is awarded to a student who receives the scholarship. For application information, please contact Professor Molly T. GERMAN

The Dee Dee and Mike Moran Education Abroad in Germany Scholarship is open to any UK student who plans to study German in an officially UK-sanctioned program in any German-speaking country for a summer, semester, or academic year. The scholarship, established by German Studies alumnae Dee Dee Moran and her husband, Mike, enables students to receive a modest stipend to help defray program costs or support the purchase of an airline ticket. Students at any level are welcome to apply. The Heidelberg Exchange Scholarship is awarded to two qualified University of Kentucky undergraduate or graduate students from any program or department. These scholarships include UK tuition and cover most of the normal expenses students incur while spending the academic year in Heidelberg, Germany. Students remain officially enrolled at UK as well in order to facilitate the transfer of credit. Scholarship recipients have a unique opportunity to develop fluency in German, experience German and other European cultures firsthand, and gain a new perspective on current German and European affairs. At the same time, they will be able to pursue formal coursework at one of Germany's premier universities at relatively little cost to themselves beyond roundtrip airfare and other travel. The Heidelberg Scholarships are awarded on the basis of the following criteria: academic achievement; maturity; open-mindedness and adaptability; readiness to learn from studying abroad; and the ability to communicate in German. FLIE-GERMAN

FLIE-German Scholarship
To be eligible for this scholarship, students must:

  • Be a major in the German track of FLIE
  • Complete the scholarship application by the deadline
  • Be a full-time, UK undergraduate student
  • Apply for, or plan to apply for, an approved education abroad program in summer, fall, or spring terms
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0) at the time of the scholarship application
  • Be in good academic and judicial standing at the time of the award and during the semester prior to the intended term abroad
  • Are freshmen, transfer, or graduate students in their first semester at UK (result of GPA requirement)
  • Plan to use this scholarship in their final semester at UK

  1. The MCLLC-German Studies faculty awards one scholarship per year with a value of $1,000. The MCLLC-German Studies faculty has the final say in awarding the scholarship.

FRENCH

The Dr. Alpharetta B. Archer Foreign Language Scholarship is an award of $200-500 for a graduate student in French and Francophone Studies.

The Ryland-MacKinnon-Mynear Award provides $500-1,000 to an undergraduate French and Francophone Studies major to travel to or study in France or another Francophone country during the summer or academic year. Applicants must return the completed application to Dr. Zoubir-Shaw (szs.shaw@gmail.com; 1023 POT) by April 15. Download the application here.

The Willa Mae Shearer Squifflet Scholarship is an award of $200-500 for an undergraduate French and Francophone Studies major who has obtained junior or senior status and demonstrates financial need. 

The Zembrod Scholarship is a $500-1,000 merit award granted annually to an outstanding French and Francophone Studies major who plans to return to the University of Kentucky the next academic year to complete their undergraduate study. Applicants must return the completed application to Dr. Zoubir-Shaw (szs.shaw@gmail.com; 1023 POT) by no later than April 15. Download the application here.



FLIE-JAPANESE

The Donna and Gabriel Treesh Foreign Studies Award is a travel award open to FLIE-Japanese students who plan to study abroad in Japan on an approved UK education abroad program in a summer, semester, or academic year. Minimum GPA at the time of application: 3.25 (or has shown remarkable academic improvement if below 3.25). Awards range from $250 to $1,000. To apply, students must complete the following by the scholarship deadline:

the application form,
(2) a one-page (double-spaced) essay explaining how this award will enhance the potential for your career and academic success, and
(3) your most recent unofficial transcript, and send all of them to Dr. Inoue at msinoue@uky.edu by the deadline (usually early-mid February
4) request two UK faculty members each to send a letter of recommendation directly to Dr. Inoue by the deadline. To request the application form and for further information about the award, please contact Dr. Inoue.



ISLAMIC STUDIES

Hajja Razia Sharif Sheikh Islamic Studies Travel Scholars Fund is open to any UK undergraduate student traveling through an approved University of Kentucky Education Abroad Program to study Islam or a graduate student conducting research for their dissertation. Undergraduate students may participate in educational or work experience(s) of cultural significance with regard to the study of Islam. Such experiences can include education abroad program(s), internship(s), or other high-impact learning or work opportunities, approved in writing by UK Education Abroad & Exchanges. The scholarship requirements are as follows:

  1. Undergraduate or graduate student
  2. Complete the application by the deadline
  3. Preference is given to undergraduate students majoring or minoring in Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures (Arabic & Islamic Studies), Foreign Language and International Economics (Arabic), or International Studies with a specialization in Africa and the Middle East, or graduate students whose research interests include the study of Islam
  4. Travel to the following countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Brunei, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and/or Yemen.

Competitive Scholarships and Awards

MCLLC students are encouraged to seek out opportunities to apply for awards, scholarships, and fellowships, on campus, nationally, and internationally.

The University of Kentucky’s Office of Nationally Competitive Awards prepares UK students with strong academic and extracurricular records to help them be successful in pursuing national competitive opportunities.

Awards that are of particular interest to MCLLC students include:

Boren Scholarships

Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Boren Scholars represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.

 

Gilman ScholarshipsThe Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go by offering awards to U.S. undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints.
Critical Language ScholarshipsThe Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully funded summer overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students. With the goal of broadening the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries, CLS provides opportunities to a diverse range of students from across the United States at every level of language learning. The CLS Program is a program of the U.S. Department of State.
Fulbright U.S. Student ProgramThe Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or for English Teaching Assistant Programs. Open to graduating seniors and recent bachelor’s-degree recipients with some undergraduate preparation and/or direct work or internship experience related to the project. Competitive applicants to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program will not have recent extensive experience abroad (excluding recent undergraduate study abroad), especially in the country of application.
DAAD ScholarshipsThis is the German Academic Exchange Service, a well-established organization offering German Studies Research Grants, Intensive Language scholarships and other programs for study in Germany.
Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Junior Fellows ProgramEach year the endowment offers approximately 10-12 one-year fellowships to uniquely qualified graduating seniors and individuals who have graduated during the past academic year. They are selected from a pool of nominees from close to 400 participating colleges. UK is a participating college. Carnegie junior fellows work as research assistants to the endowment's senior associates. Those who have begun graduate studies are not eligible for consideration.  Interested students should contact Dr. Pat Whitlow at the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards.
Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship ProgramFunded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, the Thomas R. Pickering Fellowship Program provides undergraduate and graduate students with financial support, mentoring and professional development to prepare them academically and professionally for a career in the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply.
Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship The Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship Program invites recent college and graduate school alumni to apply for full-time, six-to-nine month fellowships in Washington, DC. Outstanding individuals will be selected to work with nonprofit, public-interest organizations addressing peace and security issues. Applications are especially encouraged from candidates with a strong interest in these issues who have prior experience with public-interest activism or advocacy.
Humanity in Action FellowshipsThe Humanity in Action Fellowship brings together international groups of Fellows to study minority rights and produce original research exploring how and why individuals and societies, past and present, have resisted intolerance and protected democratic values. Separate programs take place for five weeks every summer in Amsterdam, Atlanta, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris, and Warsaw. The program is open to students and recent graduates from universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine and the United States.
