Options for Meeting Language Requirement with Languages Not Taught at UK

Students who want to satisfy the Arts and Sciences equivalent of the language requirement in a language not taught at the University of Kentucky have a few options. For the first three options and the last option, the documents mentioned should be forwarded as either a clear photo or scan to their academic adviser as well as to julie.human@uky.edu. 

Options:

1. Completion of the Seal of Biliteracy in a U.S. high school in English and a language not offered at UK. Document to send: the seal

2. Completion of high school abroad with a language other than English as the primary language of instruction. Document to send: high school transcript

3. Proof of having taken ESL (English as a Second Language) courses, either in high school or another institution. Document to send: transcript

4. Proficiency testing in person on campus. See information below:

Proficiency tests are available for several languages. A list of those languages can be found below. Tests are offered twice a year in person on campus (at UK, in Lexington), on the second Friday in October and on the first Friday in March between 1 and 4 p.m.

Before arranging for a test, students must consult with their college or departmental adviser about the policy for proficiency testing as a means to satisfy the language requirement in their majors. Students must register and pay all fees for the tests at least three weeks before the date they intend to take the test. The student is responsible for paying all costs associated with the test.

The Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department can also proctor foreign language achievement tests offered by Penn Language Center at the University of Pennsylvania in languages below.
