M.A. in French and Francophone Studies

Graduate students in French and Francophone Studies are members of a dynamic intellectual environment. In addition to their coursework in French, M.A. candidates pursue their intellectual interests in such adjacent fields as philosophy, history, women's studies, film studies, linguistics, English and art history.

Along with its sister programs, the Division of French and Italian Studies sponsors the annual KFLC: The Languages, Literatures and Cultures Conference, which, every April, brings to campus some 800 nationally and internationally recognized scholars to present and discuss their current research. Our graduate students participate in the KFLC by organizing panels featuring graduate students from all over North America.

Graduate students with a particular interest in multidisciplinary training are encouraged to pursue a graduate certificate through the Committee on Social Theory, one of the university's most vibrant centers of innovative research and collaboration across the social sciences and the humanities.

M.A. students in French and Francophone Studies are required to take 10 FR graduate courses. Other courses may satisfy this requirement with the approval of the Director of Graduate Studies;

The language requirement must be fulfilled in addition to the regular French M.A. course load;

Teaching
 
The University of Kentucky offers a variety of competitive fellowships and scholarships for graduate study, including both annual and multi-year awards. A select number of teaching assistantships are granted based on the French and Francophone studies faculty’s assessment of each applicant’s academic achievement and teaching potential.
 
Teaching assistant duties may include instructing elementary French language courses or assisting department faculty with teaching and grading responsibilities for large lecture classes. As teachers-in-training, TAs participate in required university orientation, receive close supervision and evaluation from program faculty and have access to the University Teaching and Learning Center to support their professional development as future college instructors.
 
Teaching assistantships are awarded on an annual basis and may be renewed subject to satisfactory performance, a minimum GPA of 3.0 with no grade below a B and available funding. Summer appointments may also be available to teaching assistants on a limited basis.
 
These positions include a stipend, a full tuition scholarship and health care coverage. Applicants and current students are encouraged to explore fellowship opportunities listed on the Graduate School website.
