Education Abroad in Russia is an invaluable component of language and cultural study. Education abroad for a summer, semester, or year is strongly recommended for all MCL-Russian Studies majors beyond the second year level. Education abroad not only moves students ahead in language more quickly, but allows you to gain firsthand experience with Russian, Ukrainian, Kazazh, Latvian, Georgian, and other cultural histories, architecture, art, folklore, culture and family and daily life. Cross-cultural experiences in language immersion evironments is a life-changing experience for students and it highly desireable to graduate student admissions committees and employers across the professions.
The state of study abroad for students of Russia has shifted dramatically since Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. However, while programs in Russia and Ukraine are on pause for the foreseeable future, there are still many opportunities from our partner insitutions to study Russian in a Russian-speaking community. Studying Russian in Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Armenia, Georgia or Latvia affords students access to the highest quality instructors while also explosing you to other cross-cultural intersections of Russian with other Slavic, Baltic, and Caucasian langauges and cultures.
Check out our partner programs and get in touch with Dr. Molly Blasing (mtblasing@uky.edu) or your Education Abroad Advisors with any questions about Education Abroad in Russian-speaking communities around the world.
