in later literature and in everyday life.

This course studies the forms and functions of folklore and mythology, with emphasis on the Americas. Folklore opens up questions

about the relationship of tradition to modernization, individualism, and community. We explore how folklore is fundamental to

human lives and relates these cultural traditions to identities.

CHI 330 INTRODUCTION TO CHINESE CULTURE, PRE-MODERN TO 1840

In early China, literature was a tool with which powerful groups forged ethnic, political, and cultural identities suitable for governing

such large empires. We survey early Chinese literature as a window on the past, asking how these sources trace the development of

Chinese culture by addressing issues of ethics, morality, individual agency, power, and culture as a political and social tool.

Introduces students to the fascinating world of Russian folklore complete with myths, fairy tales, legends, superstitions, and folk

practice. Students read, view, and listen to examples of Russian folklore from its earliest examples to the present day.
