Paris Attacks Topic of Public Forum

(Jan. 28, 2015) — Today, a unique group of University of Kentucky professors and Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist Joel Pett are leading a discussion of the recent terrorist attacks in Paris.

The public forum, organized by faculty members of the College of Arts and Sciences’ Program of French and Francophone Studies, is slated at 3-4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, in the east end of the Student Center, Room 211.

The discussion will focus on the recent deadly attacks on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a Parisian kosher market, as well as provide context for the social and political debates that continue to emerge in the wake of the attacks.

Joel PettPett, political cartoonist for the Lexington Herald Leader since1984, is a winner of the Pulitzer Prize in Editorial Cartooning in 2000 (and a Pulitzer finalist in 1989 and 1998) as well as the 1999Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for cartooning and the 1995 Global Media Award for cartoons on population issues. His cartoons have been published in the biggest national newspapers, and he is a weekly contributor to USA Today. He has traveled the world for the U.S. State Department, often addressing freedom of the press.

Seven illustrious UK faculty members will represent the departments of historygeography, andmodern and classical languages, literatures and cultures (MCLLC) at the event. They are:
