LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 14, 2013) — The University of Kentucky is celebrating its commitment to international education with various events Nov.18-22, joining institutions across the country to celebrate the benefits of international education and worldwide exchange.

International Education Week (IEW) is a joint initiative between the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment.

International education is growing steadily on campus. The number of international undergraduates has increased by 6 percent over last fall's enrollment.  English as a second language (ESL) undergraduate students have increased by 42 percent. Additionally, 886 UK students have enrolled in Education Abroad programs during the 2012-13 academic year, a slight increase over the previous academic year.

The UK International Center is also serving the campus community by facilitating interaction with a global, scholarly community, according to Susan Carvalho, associate provost for international programs.

“We not only create diverse opportunities for global experiences, but also promote the involvement of UK faculty and students in the international community of scholars to investigate and solve global problems.”
