Alumni Accomplishments

Over the years, we have placed our graduates to the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) program. In the Spring of 2018, for instance, a record-breaking number—8—of UK students have been accepted into the JET program to work as Assistant Language Teacher in public school systems across Japan. While not all of them are MCLLC-Japan studies majors/minors or FLIE-Japanese majors, all of them have taken courses from Japan studies program faculty, have studied abroad in Japan, and/or have actively participated in Japan-related activities and events on and around campus.

In addition to the JET, our graduates have explored diverse opportunities in a variety of fields. For instance, a number of graduates have become officers in the U.S. military. Some others entered graduate schools in fields such as medicine (UK medical school), finance (UK Gatton College of Business and Economics), political science (Cornell U), international studies (George Washington U), art studies (NYU), library sciences (U of Hawaii), and inter-Asia cultural studies (U of Tokyo). Still others entered a range of business fields in Japan, the U.S., and beyond; names of the companies include but are not limited to CSX Transportation, Aichi Forge USA, Bank for International Settlements (BIS), International Affairs Department at Urasenke (a Japanese tea-ceremony institute), Okaya USA, Interac, and ALTIA Central.
